Sleep apnea is a condition in which your breathing stops periodically during sleep, as many as 20-30 times per hour. Each time you stop breathing in your sleep, the resulting lack of oxygen alerts your brain, which temporarily wakes you up to restart proper breathing.
Sleep apnea is considered a serious medical problem and if left untreated it can lead to high blood pressure, increasing the risk of heart failure and stroke. The ongoing state of fatigue caused by sleep apnea can lead to problems at work or school, as well as danger when driving or operating heavy machinery. Other related conditions include Type 2 Diabetes, Obesity, Depression, Insomnia, Erectile Dysfunction and Cancer.
As your oral healthcare provider we are in unique position to identify those at risk for sleep apnea. Due to our familiarity with the oral cavity and upper airway we can visually detect signs associated with sleep apnea. Combined with a thorough assessment of your sleep and medical history we are able to determine your sleep apnea risk level.
Symptoms of Sleep Apnea:
- Insomnia or difficulty sleeping
- Loud snoring at night
- Waking up at night short of breath
- Snorting or choking sounds during the night (indicating a restart of breathing)
- Headaches upon waking in the morning
- Falling asleep unintentionally during the day
- Extreme drowsiness throughout the day
Once your risk level is determined we may recommend you take a Home Sleep Test. A Board-Certified Sleep Specialist will analyze the results to determine your diagnosis. If you are diagnosed with mild to moderate sleep apnea you can be treated right here at Calleros Dental with oral appliance therapy.
If you think you or someone you know may have sleep apnea call our office today to make an appointment for a sleep consultation!

As your kids return from trick-or-treating with bags of candy, there are a few tips you can follow so your family can enjoy all the fun of Halloween without harming your kids’ teeth!
Moderation is key! Teach your kids the importance of moderation with sweets. While its okay to have candy, they don’t need to eat it all day and night in the days that follow.
Avoid sticky candy. Sticky candy stays on your teeth a lot longer, increasing your risk for tooth decay.
Brushing twice daily. Make sure your kids are brushing their teeth two times daily, as well as, flossing.
Donate some of your candy. It is tempting to keep all the candy, but your kids teeth will thank you if you limit their stash. Remember, November 1-3, we are buying back your candy for $1 per pound up to 5 pounds! We will then donate the candy to Operation Gratitude
We recently added a gratitude wall here at Calleros Dental. Each morning every team member writes what they are thankful for and hangs it on the wall. This simple act allows us to create a spirit of gratitude in our office, amongst each other, towards our patients, and in our personal lives as well. We really enjoy reading what everyone is thankful for. The act of being intentional about sharing our gratitude and remaining in a spirit of gratitude has had such a positive impact on us.
We want to share our joy and invite all of our patients to practice gratitude with us, by adding to our gratitude wall at your visits. We know our gratitude wall would not be possible with out our patients, so please know that the entire Calleros Dental team is so thankful for having the best patients, who allow us to serve them on a daily basis!

Dr. Calleros was back at it again, sponsoring two bikes at the 4th Annual Tour de Pier. The Tour de Pier is a fundraising event benefiting cancer charities held at the Manhattan Beach Pier. She was able to rally up four Calleros Dental team members, Dr. Geyer, Jennifer, Desirae, and Trey to participate with her, along with some patients and friends to complete the 10 person team.
Over 400 bikes and 1500 cyclist united together in the fight against cancer, raising over $1 million dollars, surpassing the 2016 goal. The team really enjoyed being a part of such an unique fundraising event and look forward to making the Tour de Pier a yearly tradition.
Dr. Geyer is very excited about joining the Calleros Dental Team in serving the city of El Segundo and the South Bay communities. Born and raised in Bay City, Michigan, she received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry at Saginaw Valley State University in Saginaw, Michigan and her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry.
From there she moved to California to complete an additional year of training through a General Practice Residency at Cedars Sinai Hospital, where she was the Chief Academic Resident. Through her residency she gained advanced training in anesthesiology and removable prosthodontics. She has also taken advanced coursed to become an Invisalign Orthodontics provider. Currently, she is mastering CEREC technology at the highly sought after Scottsdale Center for Dentistry.
Being able to use her special gift of dentistry to serve others brings much joy to Dr. Geyer, as she actively seeks out different opportunities to do so. Being a part of a dental mission trip to Honduras, where she was able to help change the lives of so many was a very rewarding experience and she looks forward to doing it again in the future. She has also volunteered in multiple states for Give Kids a Smile Day, where thousands of underserved kids receive free oral health services. Recently, she participated in Career Day at El Segundo High School. Her giving goes beyond dentistry, mentoring a local Manhattan Beach girls youth soccer team. She looks forward to getting even more involved with the local community and finding ways to serve those in need.
Dr. Geyer loves to remain active and is so excited about the year-round nice weather that California has to offer! Enjoying nearly all sports, she especially loves soccer and played on the women’s varsity soccer team in college. Since being here in California she has found a new love, beach volleyball and has taken up yoga. You may find her running on The Strand, training for her next race…LA Marathon is on her bucket list. She and her husband reside in Hermosa Beach where they enjoy riding their beach cruisers, trying new restaurants, and walking their dog, Shelby, along the beach.
Dr. Geyer is committed to educating you about your oral healthcare and making you feel welcome in our office. She loves working with patients of all ages and can’t wait to serve you at Calleros Dental!
Wow, we can’t believe 2015 is hours from being over. 2015 was a great year and we are looking forward to what 2016 will bring. As we look back at how awesome this year has been we know Calleros Dental doesn’t exist without some pretty important people, our amazing patients!
We would like to say thank you for giving us the opportunity to improve your overall health by providing your dental care. We take this responsibility very seriously and want you to know we continuously seek out ways to ensure we are providing you with the highest quality care.
This is most evident by the hundreds of hours of continuing education Dr. Calleros has participated in throughout 2015. As technology is ever changing, Dr. Calleros makes it a priority to learn new techniques and sharpen her skills, so you can have the best experience possible.
The entire Calleros Dental team is dedicated to improving your experience as well. We take different continuing education courses, watch webinars, read your reviews and even have a coach.
2015 also sadly ends Dr. Moser’s time here at Calleros Dental (kind of…you will see here a couple times in January). She has opportunities that will take her out of state. We have enjoyed her for the past two years and will miss her, but definitely wish her all the best in her future endeavors!
We are happy to announce Dr. Kristen Geyer will be joining our team. She is highly skilled, gentle, and caring, so you are in good hands. Check back soon for her full bio!
Have a Happy and Safe New Year!
