Sleep apnea is a condition in which your breathing stops periodically during sleep, as many as 20-30 times per hour. Each time you stop breathing in your sleep, the resulting lack of oxygen alerts your brain, which temporarily wakes you up to restart proper breathing.
Sleep apnea is considered a serious medical problem and if left untreated it can lead to high blood pressure, increasing the risk of heart failure and stroke. The ongoing state of fatigue caused by sleep apnea can lead to problems at work or school, as well as danger when driving or operating heavy machinery. Other related conditions include Type 2 Diabetes, Obesity, Depression, Insomnia, Erectile Dysfunction and Cancer.
As your oral healthcare provider we are in unique position to identify those at risk for sleep apnea. Due to our familiarity with the oral cavity and upper airway we can visually detect signs associated with sleep apnea. Combined with a thorough assessment of your sleep and medical history we are able to determine your sleep apnea risk level.
Symptoms of Sleep Apnea:
- Insomnia or difficulty sleeping
- Loud snoring at night
- Waking up at night short of breath
- Snorting or choking sounds during the night (indicating a restart of breathing)
- Headaches upon waking in the morning
- Falling asleep unintentionally during the day
- Extreme drowsiness throughout the day
Once your risk level is determined we may recommend you take a Home Sleep Test. A Board-Certified Sleep Specialist will analyze the results to determine your diagnosis. If you are diagnosed with mild to moderate sleep apnea you can be treated right here at Calleros Dental with oral appliance therapy.
If you think you or someone you know may have sleep apnea call our office today to make an appointment for a sleep consultation!

As your kids return from trick-or-treating with bags of candy, there are a few tips you can follow so your family can enjoy all the fun of Halloween without harming your kids’ teeth!
Moderation is key! Teach your kids the importance of moderation with sweets. While its okay to have candy, they don’t need to eat it all day and night in the days that follow.
Avoid sticky candy. Sticky candy stays on your teeth a lot longer, increasing your risk for tooth decay.
Brushing twice daily. Make sure your kids are brushing their teeth two times daily, as well as, flossing.
Donate some of your candy. It is tempting to keep all the candy, but your kids teeth will thank you if you limit their stash. Remember, November 1-3, we are buying back your candy for $1 per pound up to 5 pounds! We will then donate the candy to Operation Gratitude
Dr. Calleros was back at it again, sponsoring two bikes at the 4th Annual Tour de Pier. The Tour de Pier is a fundraising event benefiting cancer charities held at the Manhattan Beach Pier. She was able to rally up four Calleros Dental team members, Dr. Geyer, Jennifer, Desirae, and Trey to participate with her, along with some patients and friends to complete the 10 person team.
Over 400 bikes and 1500 cyclist united together in the fight against cancer, raising over $1 million dollars, surpassing the 2016 goal. The team really enjoyed being a part of such an unique fundraising event and look forward to making the Tour de Pier a yearly tradition.
Earlier this month Dr. Calleros and Dr. Moser traveled to the Dominican Republic for an extensive three-day extraction course. This course offered them the unique opportunity to sharpen their foundational dental skills and at the same time provide free-of-charge dental services to so many patients in need. The community of Santo Domingo, DR could not of asked for two better dentists to help them with their needs!
The trip would not have been complete if these two dog lovers did not take care of the dog outside of the clinic as well. They bought him food and played with him during their stay.
We are so lucky to have such caring individuals as our leaders. They take great pride in making sure they stay at the forefront of dentistry and their skills are top-notch.

I’ve worked in dental field for how many years: 4 years this July. Calleros Dental was my first job in the dental field.
The thing I enjoy most about working at Calleros Dental is: the constant changes and updates with technology and the challenges to make myself better mentally and physically. Dr. Calleros strives for nothing but greatness, so it encourages the rest of the team to excel with her and the practice. She is also a huge fitness advocate and it helps me to stay determined and focused with my physical goals.
One interesting fact about me is: I will try ALMOST anything once.
